Our visit-a-state rule was that we needed to do a “transaction” in each state — which could be visiting a tourist attraction, eating, or simply filling up with gas. I designed three major driving trips that would get us to 44 of the US states. We had already traveled to California to see Grandma and Grandpa and would do so several times again. We traveled to the Northwest states by flying to Oregon , driving through Washington to Vancouver where we took a cruise ship to Alaska . We wanted to save Hawaii for our 50 th state so we needed to make a special trip to North Dakota first. As for the continents, we decided we needed more than just “geography” to give meaning to visiting each continent so I planned our travels to experience the essence of each continent.
