We were preparing to take — without kids — a 1999 Caribbean cruise with several other couples to celebrate our fortieth birthdays. Our friends, Jeff and Jane, turned down the invitation as they were going to spend the next few summers camping and on mission trips with their kids (10 and 12 at the time) knowing it would only be a few years until jobs, relationships and college would make family travel difficult. This realization had a significant impact on me and I was reminded of a number of adults who have never traveled outside their home state. I made myself a promise that traveling with our children would be a priority for us; giving them the experience and knowledge of the fascinating world that God has created and to give our family precious time together and memories that would last a lifetime.
